Technical aspects

Portable actuators are not designed to free a jammed valves — this is not their primary function. They are above all tools intended to replace human effort in the operation of manual valves.
That being said, Modec portable actuators can deliver up to 1000 Nm of torque.

If a valve requires more than 1000 Nm to be operated, it is generally more reasonable to replace the valve or the gearbox rather than trying to force it.

Portable valve actuators can be used on motorized valves, but only as a backup solution:

  • In the event of a power outage or during maintenance operations.

  • These valves are often fitted with small handwheels.

  • They usually require a large number of turns to operate, making the actuator particularly useful to save time and reduce operator fatigue.

A MODEC pneumatic actuator uses compressed air to produce rotational movement. The compressed air is directed into a vane-type pneumatic cylinder, causing the rotor to spin at high speed. A planetary gear train then adjusts the speed and increases the torque to achieve the performance required for valve operation.

The only difference between these portable valve excercisers is the energy source:

  • Pneumatic actuators operate with compressed air or gas.

  • Electric actuators use a motor powered by electricity or battery.

Their purpose and operation are the same: they adapt to the same valves or handwheels and deliver the same benefits in terms of efficiency, operator safety, and equipment protection.
It should be noted, however, that only pneumatic portable actuators are ATEX certified and can be used in explosive atmospheres.

A torque reaction system helps counterbalance the force exerted on both the tool and the operator when operating a valve with an Portable Valve Actuator.

Without this system, the operator would end up spinning around the handwheel! This system typically consists of a rigid arm attached to a fixed point using a specially designed strap. In this way, the reaction force from the circular movement of the handwheel is transferred to the fixed point, and the operator exerts no resistance.
modec offers a wide range of torque reaction systems that adapt to various environments and situations.

Cost & Maintenance

Portable valve actuators require little to no maintenance.

For pneumatic portable valve actuators, only the vanes and a few bearings need to be replaced once a year (cost < €100).
For electric or battery-powered actuators, a service is recommended every year or every 500 operating hours, either by your distributor or directly by the manufacturer.
These maintenance operations take only a few tens of minutes and ensure that your portable valve actuators retain their original performance and maximize their service life.

Performance & Benefits

The speed range of a portable valve actuator is very wide. The selected speed will depend on the application and specific needs. It can vary from just a few revolutions per minute to several hundred revolutions per minute.
Refer to MODEC specifications or consult our experts for more information.

They optimize efficiency by ensuring quick and precise opening and closing of valves, reducing manual effort. Additionally, they enhance operational safety and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). They also provide an economical alternative to expensive fixed actuators.

Safety & Usage

No, portable actuators do not damage valves.
On the contrary, they enable controlled and safe operations, since the maximum torque applied can be adjusted and because they exert neither impact nor vibration on the valve.

Here are key safety considerations:

Operator Training: Ensure that operators are well-trained and familiar with the specific Portable Valve Actuator model they are using.
Torque reaction system: Install and check the selected torque reaction system, ensuring that no force or resistance is required from the operator and that the system is stable.
Valve Position Verification: Before activating the PVA, double-check the valve's current position (open or closed). This prevents unintended movement and potential damage to the valve or connected equipment.
Environmental Factors: Consider the environmental conditions before operating the PVA. Factors like extreme temperatures, wet or slippery surfaces, or hazardous atmospheres may require additional precautions.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always use appropriate PPE, such as safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots, when operating a PVA.

General informations

Designed for diverse industrial applications, portable valve actuators are compact tools used to manually operate a variety of valves. Offering increased efficiency, reduced strain, portable valve actuators save time, effort, and minimize the risk of injury during valve operation.

modec portable valve actuators are compact, lightweight, and powerful, and can be easily adapted to any valve thanks to their wide range of accessories.

Portable valve actuators come in three main types: pneumatic, electric (often battery-powered), and petrol.

Each offers unique advantages depending on the application.

  • Pneumatic actuators, powered by compressed air, are both lightweight and powerful—making them ideal for use in sensitive, flammable, or explosive environments. They are ATEX certified.
  • Electric actuators provide a balance of power and convenience for various valve operations.
  • Petrol-powered actuators offer autonomy in remote locations without electricity.

modec pneumatic actuators:

  • No heat, spark or smoke
  • ATEX certified
  • High torque and speed
  • Light & compact
  • Jam & blockage resistant

modec electric actuators:

  • Excellent autonomy
  • Smoke free
  • Easy implementation
  • Integrated electronic torque & power limiter

gas actuators:

  • Unlimited autonomy
  • Ideal for remote environments

Selecting the right portable valve actuator depends on various factors:

  • the required torque,
  • available power source,
  • operating environment,
  • frequency of use,
  • cost,
  • and additional features

By considering these factors, you can choose the best actuator for your specific needs and ensure safe and efficient valve operation.

Yes, they are compatible with all types of valves, as long as these valves have a manual operating device (handwheel, crank, square drive, etc.).
They are designed to replace the operator’s arms. You simply need to select the right adapter.

MODEC offer universal adaptors that can be used with multiple valve types, providing greater flexibility and convenience.
